Homemade Stovetop Pizza (No Oven Veg Pizza) is an easy, quick 20-minute recipe made directly on a tawa or skillet with a soft, crispy crust and loaded with flavorful pizza sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, and colorful vegetable toppings. Here is how to make the best vegetarian skillet pizza from scratch at home without an oven, convection, or microwave—perfect for a quick breakfast, snack, or weeknight dinner!

Making homemade pizza must be the dream for many. Me too not an exception. Whenever I order pizza online from Dominos or Pizza Hut, I used to think “When am I going to make it on my own???” Of course, I have tried pizza using readymade pizza base and shared a post in my blog years ago. But I was waiting to make a perfect pizza from scratch following a simple recipe.
Recently my friend Shalini shared with me an easy, no-knead, no-wait, stovetop pizza recipe (also known as Tawa pizza / skillet pizza) video on YouTube. I was super excited to see the ease and quickness of this recipe and tried it on the same day. I used a simple topping with onions, tomato, olives, and capsicum. It was excellent in taste and got a big thumbs up from my family members!! Raksha loved it very much and asked me to make it the next day too.
I tried a no-yeast stovetop pizza as well; I will try to share that recipe by next week. As Valentine’s Day is nearing, I thought this post would be useful for people to cook pizza without an oven and treat your family. Whether it is for a weekend dinner, movie night or a special treat, I thought this post would be useful for people to cook pizza without an oven and treat your family. You can make the pizza base/crust thick or thin as per your wish. This recipe uses self-rising flour. As a substitute, you can use maida + baking powder + salt (check its quantity in the ingredients section).
I am sure this recipe would surely help you in making a great Veg pizza at home and that too within 20 minutes. You can enjoy it for breakfast, dinner, or as an evening snack. Just give a try and share your feedback here, I am waiting! Ok, let’s check how to make this super easy, quick Tawa Veg pizza on stovetop with step by step pictures.

Before going in detail I would like to share some pros and cons of this recipe:
Pros
- Making this pizza is super quick. There is no need of fermentation time for the pizza dough to double. You don’t have to knead or punch the dough as well. You can mix everything instantly and start baking.
- Proofing of yeast is also not needed if your dry yeast is very small in size like rava/semolina. As mine were bigger like mustard seeds, I proofed it for 5-10 minutes.
- It’s a stove top recipe. So no microwave or convection oven is needed.
- The softness of this pizza is no less than oven baked pizza when eaten hot. So you can enjoy it without any compromise.
Cons
- I felt the quantity of yeast is slightly higher but don’t worry. There won’t be any smell at all.
- A good conditioned Non-stick Pan is a must for this recipe. You can’t bake in Aluminium or steel pans.
- As a general rule of Pizza, it should be eaten hot hot, directly from the tawa. When it turns warm, it becomes chewy. Reheating in microwave is not advisable. You can try for a minute in tawa in very low flame if you wish. But try to eat them hot to enjoy its best taste.
- If you want to make the dough in advance, you can do it. But refrigerate the dough by wrapping in a foil till use because the bottom of pizza will turn out yellowish due to yeast.

Quick Notes for US & Abroad Kitchens
- Self-Rising Flour Substitutions: If store-bought self-rising flour is unavailable, make your own by whisking 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (approx. 65g) with 3/4 tsp baking powder and 1/8 tsp fine salt. For best rise and texture, ensure your baking powder is fresh.
- Yeast Activation: Ensure the water is comfortably lukewarm (around 105°F–110°F / 40°C–43°C). If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast; if too cold, it won’t activate. If using Instant or Rapid-Rise yeast, you can mix it directly into the dry flour without proofing.
- Pan & Flame Control: Use a heavy-bottomed, flat non-stick skillet or cast-iron tawa with a tight-fitting lid. Keep the flame at its lowest setting so the bottom crust turns golden and crisp without scorching before the cheese on top melts completely.
- Cheese Choices: Low-moisture shredded mozzarella (whole milk or part-skim) melts evenly without releasing excess water. You can combine it with sharp cheddar or a sprinkle of parmesan for added flavor punch.

Homemade Stovetop Pizza – No Oven Veg Pizza
Ingredients
For Pizza Dough
- 0.5 cup Self-rising flour (approx. 65g / 2.3 oz) (substitute: 1/2 cup maida + 3/4 tsp baking powder + 1/8 tsp salt)
- 0.5 cup All-purpose flour / Maida (approx. 65g / 2.3 oz)
- 0.5 cup Warm water (approx. 120 ml / 4 fl oz) add more only if needed
- 1 tsp Active dry yeast (approx. 3g / 1 tsp) (I used Eagle brand)
- 1 tsp Honey (approx. 5 ml / 1 tsp)
- 1 pinch Salt small pinch
- 2 tsp Cooking oil or olive oil (approx. 10 ml / 2 tsp) to grease the dough
For Sauce & Toppings
- 2 tbsp Pizza sauce or tomato ketchup (approx. 30 ml / 1 fl oz) as needed
- 0.75 cup Mozzarella cheese (approx. 75g / 2.6 oz) grated (as needed, I used Amul)
- 1 no Big onion thinly sliced
- 1 no Tomato deseeded and chopped
- 2 tbsp Olives (approx. 20g / 0.7 oz) chopped, a few
- 0.25 no Capsicum / Bell pepper thinly sliced piece
Instructions
- Heat 1/2 cup of water till lukewarm. Take a bowl and add the lukewarm water. To this, add 1 tsp of dry yeast and 1 tsp of honey. Mix well and cover the bowl with a lid. Let it rest for 5 minutes. The yeast will dissolve in water and become foamy.
- In the meantime, take the self-rising flour, maida, and a pinch of salt on the non-stick tawa on which you are going to bake the pizza. Mix well and make a dent in the center.
- Now add the yeast water little by little and knead into a soft, non-sticky pizza dough. (There may be some yeast water leftover, so add only as much water as required). Apply oil all over the dough and spread it evenly on the tawa. (Remember, this pizza will rise and become thick and spongy after cooking; if you want a thin crust pizza, divide the dough into two portions and spread it).
- Prick holes all over the dough using a fork and apply the tomato pizza sauce evenly. Grate some mozzarella cheese and sprinkle it over the sauce layer.
- Arrange the toppings (sliced onions, tomatoes, capsicum, and olives) as you wish and cover with another layer of grated cheese. Add more or less cheese according to your preference. (Mozzarella works best; you can use cheddar cheese too, but you won’t get the cheese pull strings).
- Place the tawa over the stove on a very low flame (preferably on the smallest burner). Close the tawa tightly with a lid and cook for 5 minutes. Now open the lid slightly (leaving a small gap) to let air and steam escape, and let the pizza cook in this state for another 10 minutes.
- Stay nearby and check for the aroma; if you get any burning smell, switch off the flame immediately. The cooking time depends on the thickness of your tawa, base thickness, and burner size. Once the cheese is completely melted and the crust is golden, remove the pizza onto a plate and slice with a pizza cutter. Serve hot with ketchup or pizza seasoning!
Notes
- To substitute self-rising flour, use 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, add 3/4 tsp of baking powder and 1/8 tsp of salt. But it’s better to use store-bought self-rising flour as it’s perfectly milled, so there may be a slight difference in softness.
- Cook this pizza on very low flame to avoid a burnt bottom. Stay nearby and watch the clock—it’s after all only 15 minutes! Once you are used to this recipe, you can cook this pizza like a breeze.
- For spicy pizza, use zucchini and oregano mix. For Indian style masala pizza, sprinkle some tandoori masala powder on top of the pizza before cooking. You can also add marinated paneer pieces like Paneer Tikka.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. If you prefer to make a yeast-free stovetop pizza, replace the yeast with 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp baking soda, and knead the dough using thick yogurt (curd) and warm water until soft.
Always use the smallest burner on your stovetop set to the absolute lowest flame setting, and use a heavy-bottomed non-stick pan. You can also place a flat cast-iron tawa underneath your skillet as a heat diffuser.
A soggy crust usually happens if watery vegetable toppings release excess moisture or if the tawa is kept tightly covered for the entire cooking time. After the first 5 minutes of covered cooking, keep the lid slightly ajar to let steam escape, allowing the crust to crisp up.
Microwaving makes the crust chewy and rubbery. To reheat, place the leftover pizza back onto a dry non-stick skillet over very low heat, cover with a lid for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese remelts and the bottom crisps up again.
