Instant tomato dosa recipe - crispy thakkali dosai with rice flour

I got this instant thakkali dosai recipe with rice flour from my School moms group friend Archana. She shared few pictures of this instant tomato dosa and a recorded voice message with recipe in WhatsApp. She suggested me to try and blog this instant dosa variety. Usually I make varieties of instant dosa recipes like wheat flour dosa, jowar dosa, ragi or millet dosa for my dinner. I am happy that I tried this recipe too. It is a very easy and quick instant dosa recipe. This batter can be prepared under 10 minutes.

With the mild tangy taste of tomato and bright red color, this tomato dosa was so good in taste. It was a super hit in my family. We all loved it. Make the batter watery like neer dosa and rava dosa because consistency of dosa batter is the key to make super crispy and lacy dosa as shown in the picture. You will get it after making one or two dosa and adjust the water quantity accordingly.

This instant tomato dosa tastes the best when served hot with coconut chutney as side dish. It also tasted good even after cooling down. So you can pack for tiffin box if you like. This batter can be refrigerated and use it the next day too. Friends, do try this easy and quick tomato dosa recipe. You will love it for sure.

Note: The picture below was taken at night using the fresh batter. The remaining pictures were taken the next day morning by making dosa with leftover batter.

Quick Notes for US & Abroad Kitchens

  • Flour Selection in US Stores: Use fine rice flour (brands like Anand, Swad or Elephant brand Thai rice flour). For semolina, fine Bombay rava or Chiroti rava from Indian grocers blends best into the watery batter, while standard whole wheat flour (atta like Aashirvaad) gives body and helps bind the lacy texture.
  • Tomato & Chilli Color Tip: For that vibrant, restaurant-style reddish-orange hue without any artificial food coloring, use ripe Roma tomatoes or vine-ripened tomatoes combined with Kashmiri or Byadgi dried red chillies.
  • Electric & Induction Stovetop Heat: Like rava dosa, this watery batter needs a very hot tawa to create lace-like holes. On glass-top electric stoves, preheat a heavy cast iron or hard-anodized dosa tawa on medium-high (setting 6 to 7) for at least 5 minutes before splashing the batter.
  • Batter Consistency Maintenance: Rice flour and sooji settle quickly at the bottom of the bowl. Always stir the batter thoroughly from the bottom before pouring each ladle onto the pan, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of warm water if the batter thickens as it sits.

Notes

  • Make the batter thin and watery to make the dosa crispy else dosa looks thick and hard. Also mix the batter everytime before making the dosa because rava may settle down.
  • Add more tomatoes and red chillies if you like more tangy and spicy dosa.
  • You can also use green chillies instead of red chillies but color of dosa won’t be bright red.
